What is a Global Therapist?

Global therapist stares at volcanoes, working with expats in Europe and around the world through transitions and authenticity searching

I am an expat American therapist residing in Guatemala. I have a psychology, coaching and consulting practice. As a global therapist, I work with individuals, couples and groups. I have a bachelor’s degree from University of Michigan and a masters degree in psychology and education from Columbia University’s Teachers College. I am mostly focused on happiness issues with my expat clients in cross-cultural environments.

I work with resources from my training at the Gottman Institute, Emotionally Focused Therapy, National Institute for the Clinical Application of Behavioral Medicine (NICBM), CBT and mindfulness. Through a thorough assessment I get to know you and figure out which modalities best fit your personality and the presenting issues. Sometimes it is a combination of practical solutions and diving deeper. Each person is different and needs a plan tailored to them.

My personal journey growing up in New York City and then living in India, Mexico and Guatemala (nearly my entire adult life) puts me in a unique position to relate to the expat experiences. I am a daughter of immigrants and have chosen a life off the beaten path. I am married to a German and have three children born abroad. My perspective distinctly prepared me to be  a global therapist supporting English-speaking expats in their journeys.

I have been through the search for community and belonging. I have learned to develop the routines, traditions and ceremonies that cement my family and partnership as a co-creation.

My experience as a mother, wife, expat and entrepreneur puts me in a special place to support your journey. I do not work with severe mental illness. My practice focuses on guiding couples and individuals to find more clarity, balance and peace in their everyday lives.

SOME COMMON THEMES WE TACKLE IN THERAPY:

How to lead a life that feels authentic. Learning to take risks and be vulnerable in relationships.

How to change old patterns and cycles of behavior with our relationships and ourselves.

I work with both couples and individuals especially those that are expats or global citizens.

I specialize in intercultural relationships, improving communication patterns, deeper understanding and profound connection. Relationships are hard work and having a guide really helps skill building and finding a route out of conflict.

I find we all have some hidden parts of ourselves that seem to push us into subconscious patterns of behavior or thinking. We unearth these cycles and see how they effect our lives and gives us a choice about how we want to live. We work through triggers, automatic responses and rigidity in general. As one gains clarity there is space for more flexibility, vulnerability and deep connection in the world. I love supporting people searching for a more authentic way of living and being. This is what being a global therapist is all about.

Global therapist makes bread with daughter. Down to earth, practical solutions for harmonious living

Are you interested in working on your personal development? Are you looking for a life coach or a life consultant? Are you feeling stagnant? Do you want to jumpstart change?

My transformational approach is a process where awareness, alignment, and action work together as catalysts to create momentum for change.

*Awareness is knowing what you genuinely want and need.

*Alignment is the symmetry between our values and our actions. It means our inner and outer worlds match.

*Action is when you are conscious that what you say, do and think are in harmony with your values.

Together we build an understanding of what you want to accomplish, and delve deeply into building awareness around any thoughts and assumptions that you may already have. To truly transform your life, I will empower you to rethink what’s possible for you.
